How to Start MMA as an Adult (Even With Zero Experience)
4 min read · Updated Sep 24, 2026
To start MMA as an adult, choose a class that teaches the main ranges of fighting, learn the basic positions, and train at a pace you can repeat each week. Team 515 (Team 515 Mixed Martial Arts), an MMA gym at 320 E. Tyler St., Longview, TX. teaches adults with no prior martial arts experience. You can begin in the adult MMA class or build a foundation through boxing, Muay Thai, or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
What will I learn in MMA?
MMA teaches you how to strike, grapple, and move between standing and ground fighting.
At striking range, you use punches and kicks while managing distance. Boxing develops your hands, footwork, and defense. Muay Thai adds kicks, knees, elbows, and close-range control.
When two people grab each other while standing, they are in the clinch. This is where you learn grips, balance, short strikes, and takedowns. Wrestling helps you bring someone to the mat or stay standing when they try to take you down.
On the ground, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches you to escape bad positions, control an opponent, and use submissions. A submission is a joint lock or choke that causes the other person to tap. Tapping is a clear signal to release the technique.
These ranges connect. A punch can create an opening for a takedown. A takedown can lead to control on the ground. Learning those transitions is a major part of MMA.
Which class should I start with?
Start with the adult class that best matches the skill you want to understand first.
Adult MMA meets Monday and Wednesday at 7:00 PM. It brings striking, wrestling, and submissions together. Many beginners also spend extra time in one base art. That gives you a smaller set of problems to study while you become familiar with the larger picture.
Muay Thai meets Monday through Thursday at 6:00 PM. Adult boxing meets Monday and Wednesday at 7:00 PM. No-Gi Jiu Jitsu meets Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00 PM. No-gi means you train in workout clothing instead of the traditional martial-arts uniform called a gi.
Friday Jiu-Jitsu at 7:00 PM is listed for both formats. Class times can shift with the season, so call before your first visit to confirm the current schedule.
What should I expect in my first class?
Your first class will focus on fundamentals with a coach guiding the work.
This is called drilling. It lets both people learn the mechanics without turning the exercise into a contest.
Wear comfortable workout clothes and bring water. You do not need gear for the first visit. Arrive about 15 minutes early so you have time to get settled. The guide to what to wear to your first class has more detail if clothing or equipment is still on your mind.
Is MMA safe for beginners?
Beginner training is coach-led and controlled, with technique and control taught before harder contact.
Day-one beginners do not live spar. Sparring means practicing against a partner who is actively resisting.
Your job at first is to listen, move carefully, and ask when something is unclear. Raw strength matters less than balance, timing, and knowing where your body should be.
Training MMA does not commit you to competing. Most adults train for fitness, practical skill, confidence, or stress relief. Fighting in a cage is a separate choice.
Do I need to get in shape first?
You can begin at your current fitness level and build conditioning through regular training.
The first few classes may leave you tired because the movements are unfamiliar. That is normal. Trying to learn every part of MMA at once usually creates more confusion. Focus on basic stance, breathing, balance, and position. As those become familiar, you can use more energy without feeling rushed.
Becoming comfortable across striking, clinch work, and grappling takes time. Two or three steady sessions each week will teach you more than occasional sessions done at maximum effort.
